Spetsnaz is a Russian language umbrella term for special forces.
The concept of using special forces tactics and strategies in the Soviet Union was originally proposed by the military theorist Mikhail Svechnykov, who envisaged the development of unconventional warfare capabilities in order to overcome disadvantages that conventional forces faced in the field.
This idea was developed by Ilya Starinov dubbed the gradfather of the spetsnaz , who implemented the idea in 1938. It wsa during the entrance of the Soviet Union into the Second World War that forces were dedicated to strategic missions of reconnaissance and sabotage.
